Our Medical Review Standards: Who We Are and How This Site Is Reviewed

Every medical, legal, and safety statement on this site is written or reviewed by Virginia Women’s Wellness’s clinical team — board-certified physicians, certified nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners providing abortion care since 1997 — against current FDA labeling and national clinical guidelines, and is dated. Our clinicians are not named publicly for their safety; their licenses are verifiable through the Virginia Department of Health Professions.

Key Facts

Who provides care at Virginia Women’s Wellness?

An all-female clinical team of physicians, certified nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners, every one licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and practicing under Virginia law. All of our clinicians are Board-Certified. The clinician team is supported by trained counselors and nursing staff, by certified sonographers and lab technicians and by a medical director who is responsible for every clinical protocol we use.

We have provided abortion care in Virginia Beach since 1997 and have cared for more than 100,000 women. We provide medication abortion through 14 weeks — in person and, for women in Virginia, by telehealth — and in-clinic procedures through 27 weeks and 6 days, with your choice of local anesthesia, twilight sedation, or being fully asleep. How can I verify that you are a real, licensed clinic?

Why don’t you publish your clinicians’ names?

Because abortion providers in the United States face documented harassment, stalking, and violence, and because publishing a clinician’s name on the internet places her and her family at risk. We made a deliberate decision to protect our clinician’s safety and their privacy. Our clinicians’ names appear in your medical record, on your prescription where the law requires it, and in the state’s public license database — but not on this website.

How is the information on this site reviewed?

1

Written or reviewed by clinicians.

Every medical statement — procedures, medications, risks, effectiveness figures, eligibility — is written or reviewed by a member of our clinical team before publication.

2

Checked against primary sources.

We review against FDA prescribing information and the mifepristone REMS, ACOG Practice Bulletins, the National Abortion Federation’s Clinical Policy Guidelines, and the WHO Abortion Care Guideline and the Society for Family Planning’s Guidelines — and we link to those sources, not to news coverage.

3

Legal statements reviewed by counsel.

Pages about the law — travel, privacy, the status of abortion pills — are reviewed by our attorneys, who hold the citations.

4

Dated and kept current.

Every page shows the date it was last reviewed. Our status page on abortion pills by mail is reviewed on a set rota and within 24 hours of any court ruling, FDA action, or federal policy change. All other pages are reviewed at least [quarterly].

5

One set of facts.

Our gestational limit, fees, hours, services, and contact details are stated once on our Fast Facts page and reused word for word everywhere — on this site, on Google, and in directory listings.

6

Plain language, exact numbers.

We quote labels and guidelines exactly. We do not round a safety statistic up or down to make a point.

Our clinical team, reviews the medical content. Legal content is reviewed by our attorneys. Attribution is by role and credential; see above for why.
